Mandalic Yin Yang

Description

Inspired in part by Buddhist mandalas, part by European symbolism, and part by Taoist aesthetics, this mandala is meant to be vivid yet balancing.  The three primary colors, their three mixes, and black and white as representations of the grey scale are included so that no basic elements of vision are missing.  People see each other as they would see themselves in a mirror.  Because of this, the black and white dots are laid out so that they must be read  as a mirror image if they are to be read symbolically as night, day, night.  It is hoped that this combined with the arrangement and balance of colors and shape can inspire a  relative sense calm and understanding in the presence of otherness.

This is loosely based on the Kalachakra, and the elements air and earth are represented as upward and downward triangles with lines through them as in classic European symbolism as well as being in the color used for each element in Buddhist mandalas.  Likewise, fire and water are represented by triangles without lines in them as in European symbolism as well as being in their Buddhist colors.  The Kalachakra would have green, up, air facing to the east to represent the rising sun. Here it is up to more closely represent a human. Earth, yellow, is added to the top to provide a balanced, grounding feel, and green is added to the bottom, which would normally be earth in the west, for the same reason.   This being meant to be read in mirror, the inner circle represents the male element with fire on the right, while the outer circle represents the female element with fire on the left.
